View Spreadsheet Values Without Opening Excel

Made for quick data checks

Open an Excel workbook or CSV export when you need to inspect rows, confirm a value, or copy readable data. It is a convenient option for devices without a desktop spreadsheet app.

Choose the worksheet you need

For multi-sheet workbooks, switch between available worksheets instead of searching through one long preview. The reader presents the cell values it can extract from each sheet.

A reader, not an Excel replacement

The preview does not preserve formulas, cell styling, charts, macros, or exact workbook layout. Use Excel or another full spreadsheet application when those details matter.

Reading model

How the spreadsheet reader turns a workbook into a table

The reader opens XLSX, XLS, and CSV files in the browser and presents the values it can extract. For Excel workbooks it also exposes worksheet names, so you can inspect one sheet at a time.

Example: a workbook contains both operational data and presentation features.

Workbook featureWhat the reader showsWhat to verify elsewhere
Worksheet tabsAvailable sheet namesHidden-sheet rules and workbook permissions
Cells and calculated resultsReadable displayed valuesThe underlying formula definition
Charts, macros, and stylingNot reproducedVisual design and automated behavior

A safe workflow for a quick spreadsheet check

Treat the browser view as a convenient data inspection surface, not as proof that every workbook feature is intact.

  1. Confirm the file and worksheet

Check the filename, then select the worksheet that contains the rows or values you expect to review.

  2. Inspect visible values

Search or scan the extracted table for the relevant record. Dates and formula results are presented as readable values where available.

  3. Escalate complex checks

Open the file in Excel or another full spreadsheet app before relying on formulas, macros, charts, print layout, or workbook protection.

A good fit for

  • Inspecting an export on a device without Excel
  • Checking a value on a specific worksheet
  • Copying readable rows from a simple workbook or CSV file

Choose another method if

  • You need to edit or recalculate the workbook
  • Formula logic, macros, charts, or conditional formatting matter
  • The workbook is a visual dashboard rather than a data table

Excel File Reader FAQ

Can I open an Excel file without Microsoft Excel?

Yes. Select an XLSX, XLS, or CSV file to view the cell values the reader can extract in your browser.

Can I view a specific worksheet?

Yes. When a workbook contains multiple sheets, you can switch between the available worksheets.

Does the reader show formulas and formatting?

It shows readable cell values, not a faithful Excel rendering. Formula definitions, styles, charts, macros, and exact layout are not preserved.

Is my spreadsheet sent to Compare2Word for processing?

No. The selected file is read in your browser and is not sent to the Compare2Word document-processing API.
